Black Butterfly
Mariposa Negra

Materials: poplar, fire, oil finish, metal fasteners
This work began as a cardboard model, as many of my projects do. At that scale, it felt right and called out to be made. As I began building the full sized piece, however, I ran into a variety of creative blocks that kept this project unfinished for several months. Using the Butterfly Mask and another untitled butterfly miniature nicho as catalysts, creativity found its way back into this project. The work fully took hold in its final form when, in frustration, I first toyed with burning it just to set the idea free, but of course the idea of lighting it on fire stuck.

This piece explores transformation, light and darkness, hope and pain.
