Commissioned Nicho #2

Date: May 2020

Materials: poplar, Brazilian Koa, milk paint, paste wax, metal fasteners
This piece was commissioned by a family looking for an elegant and functional work to organize an entryway. We went back and forth with design ideas, eventually arriving at this piece, which features a small drawer, several mail slots, a central display area for artwork or other special items, a carved crest with the agave and wave motif, and pegs for hanging items at the bottom of the cabinet.
Viewed from the side, a winged profile is visible at the bottom, hinting to the themes of hope and freedom in my work.
The piece is built using age old woodworking techniques including, proud hand-cut dovetails, through mortise and tenon joinery, and open dados for the shelf. The crest is hand-carved and adds considerably to the art and elegance of this functional piece.
