El Nicho Negro

Date: May 2020

Materials: poplar, milk paint, paste wax, metal fasteners

This piece takes a traditional nicho or niche (a small cabinet to honor a saint, a loved one, or display special items) and brings it into a world of magical realism. This winged cabinet explores themes of hope and despair, light and darkness.

This piece stands in contrast to the rest of the work in this series. The hope of this series was born out of the 2020 COVID 19 Quarantine, when birds arrived with spring all around the yard. This is the first cabinet to show the darkness of a difficult time, the place from which hope springs. The concentric squares add to the compounding nature of darkness.

In the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, this piece was raffled off, with all proceeds supporting Black Lives Matter (Los Angeles Chapter)

The wings can be removed for travel and are mounted to hand-carved tabs that are a thematic motif throughout this series. The piece is designed to be wall hung (a french cleat is built into the back panel, and an opposing cleat is included for mounting to the wall), however can also be displayed on top of a table or shelf because of its flat bottom.

The outermost cabinet measures approximately 18" tall, 14" wide, and 4.25" deep. The centermost cabinet measures approximately 9” tall, 4.75” wide, and 3.75” deep. The overall height of the piece (including the crest is) is 22", the wing span is 26", and the overall depth (including wings' forward projection) is 10”.
